href=\"https:\/\/www.fca.org.uk\/about\">Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)<\/a> has urged cryptoasset companies to send in their complete registration applications by 30 June 2020, so that it has enough time to review and register their businesses by 10 January 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United Kingdom&#8217;s top financial regulator for cryptocurrency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fca.org.uk\/news\/press-releases\/fca-reminds-cryptoasset-businesses-register-end-june\">published a stern reminder<\/a> on its website on Monday 23 June.&nbsp;The registration requirement extends to both companies that currently offer or intend to offer cryptoasset-oriented operations and activities in the UK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies that operate under its Financial Services and Market Acts of 2000 and have since pivoted to crypto activities must also reapply.&nbsp;The requirement was first announced in October 2019 and is mandated by the UK&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/2017\/692\/contents\/made\">2017 AML regulations.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fca-june-2020-deadline-for-crypto-application\">What is the reason for the FCA&#8217;s June 30 application registration requirement becomes part of UK law after 10 January 2021.&nbsp;Therefore June 30th was the last day for existing businesses to secure a priority review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end-of-June soft deadline will now allow the FCA the time to examine the submitted applications thoroughly and ask follow-up questions to the virtual asset service providers and complete the process by the due date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fca-10-january-2021-deadline-for-crypto-asset-company-registration\">The FCA&#8217;s crypto registration deadline: 10 January 2021<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies that fail to register successfully with the FCA in time in 2021 will have to stop operating in the UK, as they will not be compliant with its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/uksi\/2017\/692\/contents\/made\">Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds (Information on the Payer) Regulations 2017<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FCA emphasized the importance of this<a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/33110\/fca-crypto-companies-registration-deadline\"> watershed date<\/a> in their statement:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAny businesses that started carrying on business in the UK immediately before 10 January 2020 and are not registered by the FCA by the 10 January 2021 deadline will have to cease carrying on business.<\/p><p>Any new businesses which began operating after 10 January 2020 must be registered with the FCA before carrying out any business.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 2020:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The FCA was appointed the UK&#8217;s AML\/CFT financial regulator and supervisor of crypto-asset activity on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dlapiper.com\/en\/us\/insights\/publications\/2020\/02\/aml-bulletin-winter-2020\/fca-becomes-aml-and-ctf-supervisor-of-uk-cryptoasset-activities\/\">10 January 2020.<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li>Changes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fca.org.uk\/firms\/financial-crime\/money-laundering-regulations\">UK Government&#8217;s Money Laundering Regulations<\/a> entered into force, updating the British country&#8217;s AML framework and policies to adopt the Financial Action Task Force (FATF)&#8217;s updated recommendations and to transpose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sygna.io\/blog\/what-is-amld5-anti-money-laundering-directive-five-a-guide\/\">EU&#8217;s 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directive (AMLD5)<\/a><\/li><li>The European Union&#8217;s AMLD5 reached its transposition deadline for members.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-fca-fatf-travel-rule-and-amdl5-regulated-crypto-in-uk\">How the FCA, FATF Travel Rule and AMLD5 regulate UK crypto exchanges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" swiftly if companies fail to meet the required standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FCA will depend on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sygna.io\/blog\/what-are-the-fatfs-409-recommendations-and-standards\/\">FATF Standards<\/a> and EU&#8217;s AMLD5 as its underlying regulatory framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FCA has already transposed AMLD5 into its regime but still needs to implement regulation to cover all of FATF requirements including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sygna.io\/blog\/8-compliance-challenges-fatfs-r-16-pose-to-vasps\/\">travel rule,<\/a> which it stalled from doing fully in January 2020 citing that the market needed more time to develop solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sygna.io\/blog\/what-is-fatf-recommendation-16-for-vasps\/\">FATF Travel Rule<\/a> is a data-sharing requirement for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) with its roots in the United States&#8217; Bank Secrecy Act. <br>An update to its Recommendation 16 on Wire Transfers, the Travel Rule was promulgated by the G20 watchdog in June 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Member countries&#8217; compliance efforts are currently being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sygna.io\/blog\/fatf-travel-rule-review-june-plenary\/\">reviewed by the FATF Plenary<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sygna.io\/blog\/fatf-style-regional-bodies-fsrbs\/\">FATF-style regional bodies (FSRBs).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fca-uk-crypto-asset-aml-regulations-2018-to-2019\">The FCA&#8217;s crypto regulations: 2018 to  2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/uk-watchdog-welcomes-first-crypto-startups-to-regulatory-sandbox\">regulatory sandbox for crypto startups in 2018<\/a>, which allowed these new companies to test and work with regulators on their products and service offerings before starting operations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/uk-financial-watchdog-issues-full-guidance-on-crypto-assets\">In July 2019,<\/a> the Financial Conduct Authority published its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fca.org.uk\/publication\/policy\/ps19-22.pdf\">&#8220;Guidance on Cryptoassets&#8221;<\/a> which clarified its regulatory stance on Bitcoin and other virtual assets such as digital tokens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FCA appoints blockchain-friendly new Nikhil Rathi<\/a>&nbsp;as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former director of the London Stock Exchange (LSE) previously appeared quite bullish on the potential of distributed ledger technology (DLT). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rathi stated last year that blockchain technology can be applied to enhance the efficiency of issuance and settlements in the LSE, the country&#8217;s top stock market.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
